By the title of this entry, you can see what it is going to be about.  I am sure the first thing you are asking is, "What gives this goose the right to tell anyone else how to write fanfiction?!"

It is an appropriate question to ask, for you should never take anything at face value.

The answer is, I have no right to tell you anything.  However, I do have a level of expertise that can make your fanfic, especially your fanfic with an original character to the next level.  What expertise do you ask?  I am a professional fiction writer whose dirty little secret is writing fanfiction.

There are some rules that authors with original characters must realize before they can satisfactorily write about them within a predetermined world.

1a.  You don't own your original character, and you don't own your story.  No, contrary to you're little copyright thingie, you forfieted your ownership the moment you decided to write in the world that you love so much you didn't want to leave it.  This means that any tom, dick, or harry can take your OC and write with them, about them, and to them.  Is it polite to write about someone else's OC?  No, it is horribly bad form.  But remember, you are engaging in bad form already by writing about someone else's original characters--the canon characters you love so much.

1b.  That being said, the people who do own the canon world that you are working in, don't care about your OC.  Honest, they have way bigger things to worry about than your little original character traipsing around their world.  If they did care, you would have already heard from their lawyer, and would be forking out big bucks to defend yourself.

2.  No one else cares about your OC either.  I know that sounds harsh, but no one does.  (Yet, anyway.)  They have no reason to care about your OC, they love the canon characters.  You have to work to get them to love your OC.  Or at the very least like your OC enough to keep reading.  You have to start writing about an OC because you love the OC, and you want to write about him/her.

3.  A good story does matter!  You can't just drop your OC into the canon and not have them doing something!  Even visual artists need a verb in their art (if you don't believe me, ask :iconillmatar: a fantastic visual artist).  A story is important, get one.

4.  Criticism is there to help you.  Not the gnarly kind where people tell you, "You stink!"  The constructive kind, the kind that tells you, "You know, this isn't very plausible," or "Maybe if you had your character doing XYZ it would flow better."  Get a thick skin if you're going to write anything.  Get a thicker skin if you're going to write fanfiction and you want people to read it.

You love the world that you're writing in, that is why you want to stay there by writing about it.  I don't blame you.  I want to stay in the fan worlds that I love, and I create worlds for a living.  Give it the respect it deserves, and the respect that you're original character deserves by trying to make them the best that they can be.
